In a unified act of responsible national stewardship, the 2006 U.S. Conference of Mayors unanimously approved the resolutions “Adopting the 2030 Challenge for All Buildings.” The resolution calls for actions in communities and cities, for all new and renovated buildings, to immediately reduce the energy consumption by 50 percent of the national average for that building type, with increased reductions of ten percent every five years so that all buildings designed by the year 2030 will be carbon neutral – meaning that they will use fossil fuel energy. The Nebraska cities of Lincoln, Omaha and Bellevue were signatories to the 2006 resolution.
