The Need for Green Building Programs

Our communities are principle source-points of pollutants, waste, and manufactured toxins that are spread over the land and released into the water and air we depend upon for life itself. Buildings, including their construction and maintenance processes and their materials, account for a very significant environmental impact on our energy, atmosphere, water, waste and natural systems.

In terms of consumption alone, North America consumes more than 40 percent of the earth’s natural resources, with only 5% of the Earth’s population. This statistic describes a condition of contemporary life that is dramatically not sustainable.

It is estimated that if all other nations rise to this level of consumption, it will require the resources of nine earths just to accommodate the resource demand. The site, design, construction and operation of buildings have a significant effect on our resource consumption and on the attendant consequences of global warming.

In every growth community around the country, large facilities are, today, being planned that may not come on-line for 5 to 10 years, but their systems will certainly still be functioning over the next to 20 to 50 years. The time to act is now! Even more challenging is the fact that 85-90% of all the buildings that will exist in 2050 have already been constructed and these are the most energy inefficient structures on earth.

It is through local action, through efforts such as Lincoln Green by Design, that the world’s communities can impact our natural systems for positive gain.
