What You Can Do » Getting Serious

You’ve got the easy stuff down.
Keep going.

DELICIOUS CHANGES

Eat locally grown, organic, seasonal foods.

For your health, and the health of the environment, Eat Food, Not Too Much, Mostly Plants.

Join up with a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) group. You get fresh produce weekly at a good price and help support local farmers.

Walk or bike down to the farmer’s market.

ON THE JOB

Start a recycling program.

Encourage everyone to shut off computers at the end of the day.

Encourage your office manager to buy supplies from office supply companies who are environmentally friendly and use paper sources that contain as much post-consumer recycled content as possible and that has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

Ask your employer to not supply paper plates, disposable silverware and cups. Instead, have employees donate old plates, flatware and mugs from home.

BIG DECISIONS

Make a habit of thinking about the environment when those big life decisions come up.

Will your new house or apartment make you dependent on a car to get around?

What kind of gas mileage does the car you’re considering get?

IN GENERAL

Lead by example. Don’t be afraid to share your views with anyone who asks. The environment is something everybody should care about. And these days, it’s more and more on people’s minds.

Lead with your spending. Buy locally. Buy recycled and recyclable products with minimal packaging.

Join up with other like-minded people and help spread the word.

Demand better. We have a vision for a more sustainable community, now we must insist upon it.

Have fun. When it comes down to it, we are creating a new model for our future. Exciting stuff. Way better than watching TV.

MOST IMPORTANTLY

Contact your elected officials (and political hopefuls). Let them know that the environment matters to you.

Send a letter, an email or make a phone call every quarter to remind them. Watch how they vote on the issues and demand that they take a stance and are held accountable for their legislative decisions.

Write the Lincoln Journal Star (or other regional papers). Let them know the issues you care about when it comes to the environment.

And don’t forget to vote!
